As you may have guessed by the name of the shop, I’ve always been a fan of traditions that stand the test of time. There is something about a kilt, a well-worn piece of leather, and a story that spans generations that just hits different.
Lately, I’ve been doing a bit of self-reflection. We are staring down the barrel of a pretty significant summer here in the States. In just a few weeks, we’ll be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States: the big Semiquincentennial. It’s a mouthful to say, but it’s a milestone that represents two and a half centuries of independence, grit, and the kind of persistence that I try to stitch into every single piece I make.
But here’s the kicker: as I was looking at the calendar and thinking about how to celebrate this massive American milestone, I realized we hit a "250" milestone of our own right here at The Kilted Leatherworker.
The Story of the Second 250
Not too long ago, our little shop was featured on over 250 news outlets across the country. Little did I know when I first sat down at my workbench to make a single sporran for myself that I’d be talking to you today about a business that has reached that many corners of the map.
It’s been a bit of a whirlwind. If you know my story, you know this didn’t start as a grand business plan. It started because I was a full-time teacher looking for a way to manage stress and, quite honestly, to help my wife and me navigate some mounting medical bills. Leatherwork gave me a sense of purpose and a way to provide for my family during a season that felt pretty heavy.
To see that journey recognized by 250 different news organizations feels a lot like hitting a summit after a long, uphill hike. It’s a milestone that reminds me why I do this. It isn’t about "fast fashion" or pumping out products as quickly as possible. It’s about creating something that matters: something that lasts.
Persistence: One Stitch at a Time
Whether you’re talking about a nation lasting 250 years or a small business reaching its first major milestones, the secret sauce is usually the same: persistence.
In the workshop, persistence looks like making sure every single stitch is perfect. It’s the decision to use honest materials like full-grain buffalo hide or calfskin, even when cheaper alternatives are a click away. It’s the willingness to spend an extra hour burnishing an edge until it shines like a new coin because I know that detail is what makes a piece an heirloom instead of just a temporary accessory.
There’s a certain magic in doing things "one step at a time." When I’m working on a custom order, I’m not thinking about the 250 news outlets or the big anniversaries. I’m thinking about the person who is going to carry this bag. I’m thinking about how the leather will change, how it will soften, and how it will eventually tell the story of the person who owns it.

When we talk about the American spirit, we often talk about things being "built to last." I take that pretty literally. If I’m doing my job right, the gear I’m making today should be around to see the next big milestone.

As I sit here at my bench, soda in hand, looking at these two "250s," I’m mostly just filled with gratitude. I’m grateful for the independence our country celebrates, which allows an artisan like me to build a business from scratch. And I’m incredibly grateful to you.
