I get to sit down and tell you the stories behind the beautiful, rugged pieces that Eric creates here at The Kilted Leatherworker LLC. If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we’re all about gear that doesn’t just look good but actually survives the journey: whether that journey is a hike through the woods or a weekend-long Renaissance Faire.
Today, I am beyond excited to share a very special project with you. We’ve teamed up with the incredible Tia Renai (@tiarenai_ssance), a visionary in the world of fantasy and historical costume creation. If you haven't seen her work, you are missing out on some serious magic. Tia has this uncanny ability to blend historical accuracy with high-fantasy flair, creating outfits that look like they stepped right off a movie set.
When Eric and Tia started chatting about a collaboration, it felt like a perfect match. Tia creates the stories through her costumes, and we provide the "adventure-ready" gear that makes those stories feel real.
Why Quality Leather is the Secret Ingredient
Have you ever put together a costume and felt like something was just... off? Maybe you spent weeks sewing a beautiful linen tunic or sourcing the perfect cloak, but when you put it all on, it still felt like "playing dress-up."
Most of the time, the missing piece is texture and weight. That’s where handmade leather goods come in. There is a world of difference between a thin, plastic-y belt from a big-box store and a thick, hand-cut leather belt that actually supports the weight of your gear.
I’ve seen it happen a dozen times: someone adds one of our leather belts or a sturdy pouch to their kit, and suddenly, the whole silhouette changes. You stop looking like a person in a costume and start looking like a traveler who has seen some things.
Tia understands this better than anyone. Her work focuses on immersion. When she creates a character: whether it’s a rogue, a high-elf, or a historical traveler: she knows that the accessories need to look like they’ve survived a few dragon encounters.
Introducing the Dragon Sporran
One of the standout pieces in this collaboration is our custom Dragon Sporran. As you may have guessed from our name, kilts are a big part of our heritage here. But even if you aren’t wearing a kilt, a sporran-style pouch is one of the most functional fantasy leather accessories you can own.
For Tia’s project, Eric wanted something that felt both ancient and powerful. He took a hand dyed teal leather flap and used our specialized laser-engraving process to etch a fierce dragon head right into the hide. It’s subtle enough to look like part of the world’s lore, but bold enough to catch the eye of every passerby at the Faire.

The Highland Nomad: Your Best Friend on the Trail
While the dragon sporran is a showstopper, every adventurer needs a reliable daily carry. That’s where The Highland Nomad comes in. (You might know this as our Buffalo Belt Pouch/Sporran, but we think "Highland Nomad" captures the spirit of the piece much better!)
This pouch is the definition of "adventure-ready." It’s made from incredibly durable hide that only gets better the more you beat it up. I love the way the dark brown suede body contrasts with the leather flap. It uses a toggle closure, which is great because you don't have to fumble with buckles when you need to grab your phone (or your gold coins) in a hurry.

Bringing the "Tree of Life" to Life
Another piece that Tia has been showcasing is our Tree of Life leather belt pouch. This one is a personal favorite of mine. There is something so calming about the Tree of Life symbol, isn't there? It connects us to nature and history, which is exactly what fantasy fashion is all about.
The reddish-brown suede on this pouch has a soft, weathered feel right out of the box. When Tia styles this, she often pairs it with natural tones: greens, creams, and earthy browns. It’s the perfect accessory for a druid, a forest ranger, or even just someone who wants a touch of the mystical in their everyday life.
Craftsmanship You Can Feel
I asked Eric the other day what the most important part of this collaboration was for him. He didn't even have to think about it. He said, "Penny, it’s about making sure that when someone like Tia puts on our gear, they feel the weight of the craftsmanship."
Every piece we sent over to her was made one step at a time. Eric cuts the leather by hand, ensures every stitch is perfect, and finishes the edges so they won't fray or peel. We don't believe in "fast fashion" here. We believe in gear that you can pass down to the next generation of adventurers.
There’s a certain magic in knowing that your pouch was made by a person, not a machine in a giant factory. When you hold a piece of our leather, you can smell the quality (there’s nothing like the scent of fresh leather in the morning: it’s better than a cold grape soda!). You can feel the thickness of the hide and the strength of the hardware.
How to Level Up Your Own Fantasy Kit
If you’re looking to start your own fantasy or Renaissance costume, or if you just want to add a bit of "main character energy" to your wardrobe, here are a few tips I’ve gathered from watching Tia and Eric work together:
- Start with the Foundation: A solid leather belt is non-negotiable. It holds your kit together (literally) and gives you a place to hang your pouches, swords, or tankards.
- Mix Textures: Don't be afraid to mix smooth leather with suede. The Highland Nomad does this beautifully, and it adds a layer of visual interest that makes an outfit look "real."
- Choose a Theme: Are you a dragon rider? Go for the Dragon Sporran. Are you a scholar? Maybe add a Chronicler’s Cover to your bag so you can take notes on your journey.
- Invest in Quality: It’s tempting to buy the cheapest option, but trust me: nothing ruins a photo (or a day at the Faire) faster than a broken strap or a pouch that falls apart.
More Than Just a Costume
What I love most about working with Tia Renai is that she shows how these pieces aren't just for "dress-up." A lot of our customers use their handmade leather goods every single day.
Take the Traveler Pouch, for example. It looks right at home on a set of medieval breeches, but it looks just as good on a pair of blue jeans. I’ve seen people use them to carry tools, electronics, or even snacks for their dogs.
When we design these pieces, we’re thinking about the "Modern Adventurer." You might not be fighting orcs (hopefully!), but you’re navigating the "urban jungle," commuting to work, or exploring new cities. You deserve gear that works as hard as you do and looks amazing while doing it.

Working with Tia has been a dream. Seeing our leather gear come to life through her artistry is a reminder of why Eric started The Kilted Leatherworker in the first place. It’s about more than just selling products; it’s about being a part of your story.
