As you may have guessed, I’m a big fan of things that serve more than one purpose. I love the traditional look of a leather sporran, but I also know that not everyone is wearing a kilt every single day (though I certainly try to!). Crafting the Details: One Stitch at a Time
Every time I sit down to work on one of these, I start by ensuring that every stitch is perfect. For the Hybrid Pouch, I use a hand-lacing technique around the edges. It’s a slow process: definitely a "slow crawl" compared to using a machine: but the result is a strength and a visual character that you just can't get any other way.
I enjoy the rhythm of lacing. It allows me to inspect every inch of the leather as I go. If there’s a flaw in the hide that shouldn't be there, I catch it. If the tension isn't just right, I fix it. For the hair-on portion, a gentle brush with a soft-bristled brush (like an old toothbrush or a dedicated suede brush) in the direction of the hair will keep it looking clean and smooth. If it gets a little dusty from a day at the faire, just a quick shake and a light damp cloth usually does the trick.
