First off, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the heat. People often ask me, "Eric, aren't you hot in all that wool?"
The truth is, a kilt is nature’s air conditioner. While everyone else is trapped in denim or heavy canvas trousers, you’ve got built-in ventilation. It’s refreshing, like popping the top on an ice-cold root beer after a long day in the workshop. For summer, I usually recommend a lighter 5-yard kilt or even a high-quality utility kilt if you’re going to be doing some serious trekking.

- Keep the Top Light: Put away the heavy Prince Charlie jackets. For summer, a Ghillie (Jacobean) shirt in linen or a simple, high-quality cotton T-shirt or polo is the way to go. I personally love a solid forest green or navy shirt: it lets the tartan and the leather do the talking.
- Mind the Hose: Kilt hose can be hot. In the peak of summer, I’ll often push my hose down to my shins for a more relaxed, "slouched" look. It’s more casual and much cooler.
- Footwear Matters: If you’re on the trail, a good pair of leather boots is non-negotiable. If you’re at a fair, a clean pair of leather sneakers can actually look great with a kilt and a leather pouch, giving it a very modern, urban-Scottish feel.
- The Belt: Never skip the belt. A thick leather kilt belt provides the "anchor" for your pouches. It ties the top and bottom of your outfit together and makes sure everything stays exactly where it should.
