To understand why I design my gear the way I do, we have to look back. The sporran (which is Gaelic for "purse") didn't start as a fashion statement for weddings. Hundreds of years ago, Highland men didn't have pockets in their kilts. They needed a way to carry their daily essentials: oatmeal, fire-starting tools, or lead shot.

Introducing "The Highland Nomad"
When I sat down at the bench to design what I now call The Highland Nomad, I wanted to bridge that gap. I wanted something that a kilt-wearer would feel proud to sport at a Highland Games, but that wouldn't look out of place on a pair of Levi’s at a backyard BBQ.
The Highland Nomad is what I call a hybrid. It functions as a handmade leather pouch for your belt, but it retains the silhouette and the spirit of a traditional day sporran.
One of the first things you’ll notice about it is the material. I use full-grain buffalo leather for these. Why buffalo? Because it’s some of the toughest stuff on the planet. It has a larger, more pronounced grain than standard cowhide, and it is naturally water-resistant. If you’re caught in a sudden downpour, you don’t have to panic about your gear getting ruined. Plus, buffalo leather develops a patina like nothing else: every scratch and scuff tells the story of where you’ve been.
Why a Drawstring Matters
As you look at different leather belt pouch options, you’ll see a lot of zippers or simple flap-overs. On The Highland Nomad, I chose a leather drawstring with a toggle closure.
There’s a practical reason for this. Zippers break. They get stuck. They rattle. A drawstring, however, allows you to overstuff the pouch if you need to, and then cinch it tight. It creates a flexible volume. If you’re carrying a minimalist wallet and your keys, you cinch it down. I also include a solid brass hardware closure on the outer flap. Brass is the perfect partner for buffalo leather. It doesn't rust, and it ages beautifully alongside the hide, losing its shiny "new" look and taking on a deep, muted glow that screams "heirloom quality."

We’ve all been there. You’re at a crowded festival, you’ve got a soda in one hand and you’re trying to look at a vendor’s table with the other.
