But there is something truly special, something almost magnetic, about working with hair-on hide.
Whenever I’m out at a local market or setting up the Kilted Leatherworker booth, the pieces that stop people in their tracks aren't always the sleekest or the most "modern" designs. Instead, it’s the pieces that look like they’ve been pulled straight from nature. It’s the hair-on hide.

Most of the leather we see daily has been buffed, sanded, or treated to be perfectly smooth. And don’t get me wrong, I love that look too! But hair-on hide retains the original character of the animal. Because of this, no two pieces are ever identical. When I’m sitting at my bench, I can have two sections of hide cut from the same side of leather, and they will have completely different patterns, cowlicks, and color transitions.
As you may have guessed, this makes my job as a maker a lot more interesting. I’m not just cutting out a pattern; I’m "fussy cutting" (as some crafters call it) to make sure the most beautiful part of the natural pattern ends up right on the front of the bag or pouch.

It’s a fair question! While you shouldn't take a hairbrush to your pouch every morning, genuine hair-on hide is surprisingly durable. A little bit of rain isn't going to hurt it.

There is something incredibly relaxing about the "quiet" parts of my job. After I’ve spent the morning dyeing leather pieces and letting them dry on the workbench, I get to move into the assembly phase.
Selecting the right section of hair-on hide is almost like an art project in itself. I have to look at the direction of the hair (the "lay") to make sure it flows downward on the pouch.
