That’s how The Highland Nomad was born here at The Kilted Leatherworker LLC. It’s more than just a leather belt pouch; it’s a modern, rugged evolution of the traditional Scottish sporran, blended with a heavy dose of Texas grit.
The Roots: From the Highlands to the Workshop
As you may have guessed from our name, I have a deep appreciation for heritage. In Scotland, the sporran was the original "hands-free" carry. Since kilts don't have pockets (a design choice I respect but find occasionally impractical), the sporran became the essential vessel for everything a highlander needed.
When I started designing our line of pouches, I wanted to capture that same spirit of utility but adapt it for the modern adventurer. Whether you’re wearing a kilt or a pair of broken-in blue jeans, you deserve a carry system that feels like an extension of yourself. I enjoy the process of taking those old-world concepts and refining them until they’re "adventure-ready."

I love working with buffalo leather. It has a grain and a character that you just don’t get with standard cowhide. It’s thick, it’s resilient, and it smells like a workshop should. For this specific pouch, I use a rugged buffalo leather that can take a beating and come out looking even better.
I decided to go with a leather toggle closure for this one. Why? Because it’s simple and it works. There are no zippers to snag and no plastic clips to break. If you’re a fan of "honest materials" but need something a bit more structured, this is the one for you. I make this using a rich brown pull-up leather. If you aren't familiar with "pull-up," it’s a type of leather that changes color slightly when you bend or fold it because of the oils and waxes inside. It develops a "distressed" look almost immediately, telling the story of everywhere you’ve been.
The Traveler features a secure buckle closure and dual belt loops on the back. I designed it specifically to handle the "Everyday Carry" (EDC) essentials. The Art of the Trail: The Tooled Belt Pouch
Sometimes, you want a piece that shows off a little more of the "maker's mark." My Tooled Belt Pouch is where I let my artistic side out a bit more.
I start with a resilient buffalo suede for the body of the pouch: it’s incredibly soft to the touch but tough as nails. Then, I add a reddish-brown leather flap that I tool by hand. But the real "crown jewel" of this piece is the closure: a handmade elk antler button.
Little did I know when I started leatherworking that I’d be spending so much time sourcing antler, but there’s just no substitute for the real thing. It gives the pouch a primitive, yet refined feel that perfectly matches the "Highland Nomad" philosophy. It’s the kind of gear that makes people stop and ask, "Where did you get that?"
Why "Handmade" Actually Matters in 2026
I know, I know. You can go online and find a thousand "leather" pouches that cost less than a lunch special at the local diner. But there’s a catch (there’s always a catch, isn’t there?). Most of those mass-produced items use "genuine leather," which is actually the lowest grade of real leather you can buy: it’s basically the plywood of the leather world.
When I talk about "honest materials," I mean full-grain hides. I mean leather that still has its soul.
