As I sit here at my workbench, looking at a stack of hides and a set of tools that haven’t changed much in centuries, it’s hard not to feel the weight of this year. This July 4th isn't just another Independence Day; it’s the 250th anniversary of the United States. Two hundred and fifty years. It’s a milestone that makes you pause and think about what lasts, what matters, and what it means to be part of the American story.
When I started The Kilted Leatherworker, I didn't set out to be a part of a national legacy. I just wanted to make things that wouldn't fall apart (and maybe find a way to honor my own heritage while I was at it). But as we hit this Semiquincentennial, I realize that the work I do, the cutting, the stitching, the sweat, is a small thread in a much larger tapestry of American grit.
What is an "American Operator"?
You might have seen the "American Operator" badge on our site or social media. To me, being an "American Operator" isn't about a title or a job description. It’s a mindset. It’s about someone who takes ownership of their journey, values their independence, and relies on gear that is as tough as they are.
In today’s world, we’re surrounded by things designed to be replaced. Fast fashion, plastic gadgets, items made by machines in far-off places. Being an American Operator means choosing a different path. It means choosing items made by a neighbor, items with a soul, and items built to survive the long haul.

One of the themes of this 250th anniversary is the "American Experiment." It’s the idea that we are always a work in progress. I feel that every time I pick up a needle. I’m always learning, always refining, ensuring that every stitch is perfect so that the piece I make for you today might still be around when the next big anniversary rolls around.

I’m often asked why I keep things small and handmade. The truth is, I enjoy the process. There’s a certain peace in the rhythm of the work. If I’m feeling a bit stressed, I’ll grab a cold cream soda (nothing beats a good root beer or cream soda when you're working), put on some music, and just focus on the leather. It’s a way of staying grounded.
