As the weather starts to turn, well, as much as it ever does here in Texas, I find myself spending more time out in the shop and even more time dreaming about the trail.
When people hear my company name, their minds usually go straight to the Scottish Highlands. And they aren't wrong! My roots and my passion for traditional gear are what started this whole journey. But today, I want to talk about an item that often gets pigeonholed into "formal wear" when it actually belongs out in the wild: the sporran. Specifically, I want to dive into why a buffalo leather sporran, especially one with that beautiful hair-on-hide texture, is perhaps the most underrated outdoor companion you could ever own.
More Than Just a "Kilt Pocket"
As you may have guessed, the sporran originally came about because kilts don’t have pockets. If you’re wandering through a glen or across a ridge in a kilt, you need somewhere to put your flint, your oats, or your coins. Despite that thickness, it stays surprisingly pliable. I love that it doesn’t feel like a rigid piece of plastic. It moves with you. If you’re bending down to start a campfire or reaching up to grab a low-hanging branch, a buffalo leather pouch has enough "give" to be comfortable while still protecting whatever you’ve got tucked inside. Little did I know when I first started leatherworking that I would become so addicted to the specific feel of buffalo hide, but here we are!
The Real Deal: Authentic Buffalo Leather (Front and Center)
For this spring season, I want to put the spotlight back where it belongs—on the actual buffalo leather sporran/belt pouch itself.
Here’s the front view of the pouch so you can really see what I’m talking about: the dark brown suede buffalo leather body, that reddish-brown leather flap, and the simple antler toggle closure that just works.
