Hi, I’m Penny! If you’ve ever found yourself frantically patting your pockets at an airport security line or digging through the bottom of a backpack for your passport while a line of impatient travelers huffs behind you, then you know exactly why I’m writing this.
Travel is supposed to be about freedom and adventure, but let’s be honest, managing your "stuff" can be a total drag. Between the phone, the wallet, the keys, and that crumpled boarding pass, our pockets often end up looking like we’re trying to smuggle a litter of kittens.
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make "the carry" easier. At The Kilted Leatherworker, we’re obsessed with items that are as functional as they are beautiful. Today, I want to talk about the unsung hero of the travel world: the leather belt pouch. Or, as we like to call it in its more traditional form, the sporran.
What Exactly Is a "Highland Nomad"?
You might be wondering, "Penny, isn't a sporran just for guys in kilts?" Well, yes and no! Historically, the sporran was the Highland answer to a pocket-less kilt. But when we designed The Highland Nomad, we realized we were creating something much more universal.
It’s essentially a belt-mounted vault for your essentials. Crafted from premium buffalo and cow leather, it’s built to slide right onto your belt (it fits up to a 2.75-inch width, by the way). Whether you’re wearing a kilt in Inverness or a pair of well-worn jeans in Austin, it’s the most efficient way to keep your gear accessible.

1. Security That Stays With You
One of the biggest stresses of travel is theft. We’ve all seen the warnings about pickpockets in crowded plazas. The beauty of a belt pouch like The Highland Nomad is that it’s physically attached to you. Unlike a shoulder bag that can be snatched or a backpack that has "blind spots" behind you, your pouch sits right at your hip or front.
You can feel it. You can see it. And most importantly, you don't ever have to set it down. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly left a bag under a cafe table because I was too distracted by a delicious cold ginger ale!) With a belt pouch, your valuables stay on your person from the moment you leave the hotel until you’re back safely for the night.
2. The End of "The Pocket Dump"
We’ve all been there. You sit down on a plane or a bus, and your pockets are so full of "essentials" that you can barely bend your legs. You end up doing the "pocket dump": piling everything into the seatback pocket, only to realize later that you left your favorite minimalist wallet behind.
By moving those items into a dedicated pouch, you free up your movement. It distributes the weight around your waist, which is much more natural for your body than carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder all day. After ten miles of exploring a new city, your lower back will thank you.

3. Buffalo Leather: Built for the Unpredictable
When I talk about "honest materials," I really mean it. We use buffalo leather for The Highland Nomad for a very specific reason: it’s tough as nails.
Buffalo hide is naturally more porous and thicker than standard cowhide, which gives it incredible durability and a unique, pebbled texture. It’s also naturally water-resistant. If you get caught in a sudden rainstorm while hiking a trail, your phone and your Chronicler’s Cover journal have a much better chance of staying dry.
Plus, there is something about the way buffalo leather ages. It doesn't just "wear out": it develops a patina. Every scratch and scuff from your travels tells a story. It becomes a map of where you’ve been.
4. Why Handmade Matters (A Note from the Workshop)
I want to share a little secret with you. Every single pouch we ship out is made with a lot of heart. Eric, our founder, actually started this whole journey because he wanted to learn how to make a sporran. He was a full-time teacher looking for a way to relieve stress, and leatherworking became his sanctuary.
When you buy a piece from us, you’re not just getting a mass-produced accessory from a factory. You’re getting a piece that Eric or one of our small team has cut, stitched, and finished by hand. We take it one step at a time, ensuring that every stitch is perfect. It’s a slow process, but we believe that the things you love most should be made with patience.
(As you may have guessed, we’re a bit addicted to the smell of fresh leather in the morning: it’s better than any alarm clock!)
5. From the Airport to the After-Party
One of my favorite things about a leather belt pouch is its versatility. If you’re traveling light, you might have The Wayfarer’s Tote (our hand-stitched carry-all) for your larger gear, but keep the nomad on your hip for your quick-access items.

Once you reach your destination and drop your heavy bags at the hotel, you don't need to repack. Your belt pouch is already loaded with the essentials for a night out or a day of sightseeing. It transitions perfectly from a rugged hiking trail to a nice dinner. It’s refined carry at its best.
What Fits Inside?
I often get asked what you can actually fit in one of these. To give you an idea, here is my typical "Travel Nomad" loadout:
- My smartphone (even the larger models fit comfortably).
- A Burgundy Wrinkle Minimalist Wallet.
- My passport.
- A small tin of lip balm.
- A pocket knife or multi-tool (if I'm not flying!).
- A few loose coins for the local street food.
Everything is secure, right where I can reach it, and I don't feel like a pack mule.
Ready for Your Next Adventure?
There’s something about the weight of real leather that tells a story even before you open the flap. It’s a companion. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend camping trip or a month-long trek across Europe, having the right gear makes all the difference.
If you’re tired of the "pocket struggle," I’d love for you to check out our collection. Each one is unique and made with love right here in our workshop.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read a bit about what we do. It truly means the world to us and Eric's family. We’re so grateful to have you as part of our community of adventurers and makers.
Until next time, keep exploring and stay kilted!
