Travel Planning 101: Why a Mini Padfolio is Your Best Trip Companion

hero image

Hi, I’m Eric.

As I sit here at my workbench today, looking at the calendar, I realize it’s already mid-March. If you’re anything like me, your mind is probably already drifting toward summer vacations, road trips, and maybe a few flights to places you’ve never been. There is something about this time of year: the way the light changes and the air starts to warm up: that just makes you want to pack a bag and go.

But as much as I love the destination, I’ve learned over the years that the journey is a whole lot better when you aren't frantically digging through a backpack looking for your hotel confirmation or a working pen.

That’s exactly why I wanted to talk to you today about something I’ve been crafting quite a bit lately: the mini padfolio.

Now, you might think a padfolio is just for boardrooms or stiff business meetings. But honestly? In my experience, a well-made leather mini padfolio is actually the ultimate travel companion. It’s small, it’s rugged, and it keeps your life organized when you’re miles away from home.

The Digital Trap: Why Paper Still Wins

I’ll be the first to admit that I love my phone. It’s got my GPS, my camera, and about a dozen travel apps. But have you ever landed in a foreign airport after an eight-hour flight only to realize your battery is at 3% and the local Wi-Fi is down?

I have. It’s not a great feeling.

That was a big "Aha!" moment for me. I realized that while digital is great, having a physical backup is essential. I started carrying my important info in a mini padfolio. There’s a certain peace of mind that comes with knowing your flight itinerary, your hotel address, and your emergency contact numbers are right there in your pocket, written on actual paper that doesn’t need a charging cable.

What Makes it "Mini" (and Why That Matters)

When I design these items, I’m always thinking about how they feel in your hand and how they fit into your life. A full-sized legal padfolio is great for an office, but it’s a nightmare to lug around a museum or a hiking trail.

A mini padfolio, on the other hand, is designed to be slim. It fits easily into a backpack, a large coat pocket, or even tucked under your arm as you’re navigating a busy train station. It’s designed to hold a 3.5" x 5.5" memo pad: the perfect size for quick notes: without the bulk of a traditional document carrier.

A Sturdy Writing Surface Anywhere

One of my favorite things about these leather covers is that they aren't just for holding paper: they are the desk.

Think about the last time you tried to write a postcard while sitting on a park bench, or tried to jot down a local’s recommendation for the best tacos in town while standing on a windy street corner. It’s nearly impossible to get a clear sentence down when your paper is flopping around.

Because I use high-quality, sturdy leather, the padfolio provides a solid, flat surface. Whether you’re on a plane with a shaky tray table or sitting in the grass at a national park, you’ve got a stable place to write. I love knowing that something I made by hand is helping someone else capture a memory or a thought in the moment.

Organizing the "On the Fly" Essentials

Travel is full of small pieces of paper that you only need for about ten minutes, but if you lose them in those ten minutes, your day is ruined. I’m talking about train tickets, luggage tags, valet stubs, and museum passes.

I design my mini padfolios with dedicated pockets to catch all that "on the fly" clutter. Instead of stuffing a receipt into your jeans pocket only to have it go through the wash later, you can slide it right into the leather sleeve.

It’s also a great spot for your passport. Having your ID and your boarding pass in one secure, beautiful leather folder makes moving through security feel a lot less like a scramble and a lot more like a walk in the park.

If you're looking for something even more specialized for just your cards and cash, you might enjoy my thoughts on choosing the best minimalist leather wallet, but for the full travel experience, the padfolio is where it’s at.

Built for the Long Haul (Literally)

When I’m at my bench, I think a lot about durability. I know that if you take one of my pieces on vacation, it’s going to get tossed into bags, dropped on sandy beaches, and maybe even have a little coffee spilled on it in a rushed morning haze.

That’s why I don’t take shortcuts. I enjoy the process of ensuring that every stitch is perfect. I use a saddle stitch, which is a traditional hand-stitching technique. If one thread were to ever break (which is rare!), the rest of the stitching wouldn't unravel like it would on a machine-sewn item from a big-box store.

The leather itself is also a storyteller. Unlike plastic or cheap "genuine leather" that peels and cracks after one trip, real, high-quality hide actually gets better with age. It develops a patina: a unique sheen and texture that reflects everywhere you’ve been. Every scratch and mark becomes a souvenir of that hike in the Rockies or that rainy afternoon in London.

The Perfect Travel Pairings

As much as I love the mini padfolio, I’ve found it works even better when it has a "partner." If you’re the type who likes to stay light on your feet, I often suggest pairing a padfolio with one of our belt pouches.

Keeping your phone and wallet in a pouch on your hip leaves your hands free to take photos or hold a map, while your padfolio stays safe in your bag or pocket for when you need to get down to business (or just write home). It’s the ultimate "pro-traveler" setup.

If you’re curious about which carry style fits you best, I actually wrote a whole post about belt pouches versus purses that might help you decide.

Why I Do What I Do

People often ask me why I put so much time into these small items. "It's just a notebook cover, Eric," they might say. But to me, it’s not.

I love the idea that something I made by hand, one step at a time, is going to be there when you’re planning your dream trip. I love the idea that it’s going to hold the tickets to your first anniversary getaway or the sketches of the mountains you finally climbed.

There is something about the smell of the leather and the feel of a handmade item that makes the everyday feel a bit more special. And isn't that what vacation is all about? Taking a break from the ordinary and treating yourself to something that lasts.

Ready for Your Next Adventure?

Whether you’re heading across the globe or just down to the local park for a Saturday morning coffee, I truly believe that being organized helps you enjoy the moment more. A mini padfolio isn't just a tool; it's a way to slow down, put pen to paper, and truly experience where you are.

If you’re starting to plan your summer travels, I’d love for you to take a look at our latest collection of leather goods. Each one is made with love right here in my shop, and I’d be honored to have one of my pieces join you on your next journey.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read a bit of my story and for supporting what I do. It means the world to me that I get to share my passion for leatherworking with you.

Safe travels, wherever the road may lead you!

Warmly,

Eric
