Hi, I’m Eric. If you’ve spent any amount of time outdoors, at a crowded renaissance faire, or just navigating the daily hustle of a busy city, you know the struggle. It’s that moment when your pockets are bulging with keys, a wallet, and a phone, making every step feel awkward. Or maybe you’ve tried carrying a traditional bag, only to have it swing around and hit your side while you’re trying to climb a trail or reach for something.
I founded The Kilted Leatherworker LLC because I wanted gear that didn't just sit there, I wanted gear that helped me do things. There is something about the feeling of being completely unencumbered that changes how you interact with the world. That’s where the idea for what I call The Highland Nomad came from.
A buffalo leather belt pouch isn’t just an accessory; it’s a shift in how you carry your life. It’s about being "adventure-ready."
Why Your Current "Carry" is Holding You Back
We’ve all been there. You’re out for a hike, and you want to take a quick photo of the view. You fumble with your pocket, trying to slide your phone out past your keys. By the time you get it, the light has shifted, or the bird has flown away. Or worse, you’re at a festival, and you’re constantly checking your back pocket to make sure your wallet hasn't wandered off.
I’ve always found that traditional pockets are, frankly, a bit of a design flaw for active people. They’re fine for sitting at a desk, but the moment you start moving, they become a liability. Bags are better, but a shoulder strap can get tiring after a few miles.
When I first started wearing a belt pouch, specifically one made from rugged buffalo hide, it was like a lightbulb went off. It’s the ultimate "hands-free" solution. It stays fixed at your hip, out of the way of your arms, but right where your hand naturally falls. It’s like having an extra, much better-organized pocket that doesn’t weigh down your trousers.

Enter The Highland Nomad: The Science of Buffalo Leather
As you may have guessed, I’m a bit of a stickler for materials. When I was designing The Highland Nomad, I knew I couldn't just use any leather. It had to be buffalo.
Why buffalo? Well, there are a few factual reasons why this material is the king of the trail:
- Strength and Thickness: Buffalo leather is often 2-3 times thicker than standard cowhide. This gives it a structural integrity that you just can’t get from thinner skins. It doesn’t just hold its shape; it protects what’s inside.
- Breathability: One of the most interesting things I learned during my research is that buffalo leather is highly porous. It "breathes" and adapts to different temperatures. If you’re out in the heat, it doesn’t get that sticky, stifling feeling that some synthetic materials do.
- The Patina: This is the part I love the most. Full-grain buffalo leather doesn't wear out; it wears in. It develops a patina: a rich, darkened, and smoothed texture: that tells the story of every mile you’ve walked.
There is something about a well-worn pouch that feels like an old friend. It starts to look like a well-worn saddle, and every little scratch or scuff just adds to the character.

How It Changes the Way You Adventure
When I talk about "adventure," I’m not just talking about scaling mountains (though it’s great for that, too). An adventure can be a trip to a new city, a weekend at a music festival, or even just a long walk through a local park. Here is how a pouch like The Highland Nomad changes that experience:
Security and Peace of Mind
In a crowded environment, security is everything. I designed the closures on my pouches: like the toggle or the heavy-duty clasp: to be secure but accessible. You don’t have to fumble. Because it’s attached directly to your belt, it’s much harder for someone to snatch than a purse or a backpack. I personally feel a lot more relaxed knowing my essentials are right against my hip.
Better Weight Distribution
Have you ever noticed how a heavy wallet in one pocket can make you walk slightly off-kilter? It sounds small, but over ten miles, it adds up to a sore back. By centering your gear on your belt line, the weight is distributed through your core and legs, which are much better at carrying loads. It feels lighter because it is positioned better.
Immediate Accessibility
Whether you need your multi-tool, your phone, or a quick snack (maybe a refreshing soda for a boost of energy), you shouldn't have to stop and take off a pack to find it. Everything in The Highland Nomad is one reach away.

Handcrafted One Step at a Time
I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’m slightly addicted to the process of making these. There’s a meditative quality to hand-stitching. At The Kilted Leatherworker LLC, I don’t use big assembly lines. I use honest materials and my own hands.
When I’m in the workshop, I’m thinking about the person who is going to use the pouch. I’m ensuring that every stitch is perfect because I know this piece needs to last five, ten, or even twenty years. I use heavy-duty waxed thread because it’s the only thing that can truly keep up with buffalo hide.
Little did I know when I started this journey that people would appreciate the "slow" way of doing things so much. But then again, I think we all crave something real in a world full of plastic. When you hold one of these pouches, you can feel the weight of it. You can smell the authentic hide. It’s a tactile reminder that some things are still made to last.

Versatility: From the Highlands to the High Street
I often get asked if these are only for people who wear kilts. While I certainly enjoy wearing mine, The Highland Nomad is designed for everyone. It looks just as home on a pair of rugged denim jeans as it does on a traditional kilt.
The aesthetic is what I call "rugged-refined." It fits that adventure-ready philosophy perfectly. It’s not too flashy, but it’s clearly high-quality. If you're looking for something slightly different, I also enjoy working on pieces like The Wayfarer’s Tote, which brings that same buffalo durability to a larger carry-all.
But for the true adventurer: the person who wants to move fast and light: the belt pouch is the way to go. It pairs beautifully with other essentials, like The Chronicler’s Cover. Imagine sitting on a rock at the end of a long trail, pulling your journal out of your pouch, and recording the day's events. That’s the kind of moment I build these for.

Choosing Your Companion
When you’re looking at getting a leather pouch, there are a few things I suggest you consider:
- The Closure: Do you prefer a quick-release clasp or a traditional wooden toggle? The toggle has a wonderful rustic feel, while the clasp is incredibly fast for one-handed use.
- The Size: Think about what you actually carry. I try to keep The Highland Nomad sized perfectly for a large smartphone, a slim wallet (like my minimalist wallet), and a set of keys.
- The Loop: Make sure the belt loops are wide enough for your favorite belt. Most of my pouches are designed to fit up to a 2.5-inch belt, which covers everything from standard jeans belts to heavy-duty utility belts.
A Note on Gratitude
I’m constantly surprised and humbled by the stories I hear from folks who take my gear out into the world. Knowing that a pouch I stitched in my workshop is currently wandering through a forest in Oregon or navigating the streets of Edinburgh is what keeps me going.
Thank you for supporting small-scale craftsmanship. It means the world to me that I get to spend my days working with these incredible materials to create things that help you explore your world.
If you’re ready to ditch the overstuffed pockets and experience a bit more freedom on your next outing, I’d love for you to take a look at our current collection of The Highland Nomad pouches. Every one of them is unique and made with a lot of heart.
I truly appreciate your time and for letting me share a bit of my passion with you. Here’s to many more adventures, hands-free and heart-full.
Warmly,
Eric
