As you may have guessed, things are starting to get a little bit hectic here at the workshop. While most people are currently preoccupied with finding the nearest swimming pool or hiding in the air conditioning with a cold bottle of root beer (there is something about a frosty soda that just makes a Texas July bearable, don't you think?), the LARP and Renaissance Festival communities are in a full-blown "pre-season panic."
If you’ve been browsing Etsy lately and noticed that high-quality fantasy sporrans are disappearing faster than a rogue in a smoke cloud, you aren’t imagining it. There is a perfect storm happening right now in the world of leather gear, and if you’re planning your kit for the upcoming season, you might want to pull up a chair.
Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of the Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF) or a first-time D&D cosplayer, here is why everyone is scrambling for leather pouches this month: and how you can make sure your character kit is ready before the first gate opens.
The July Rush: Why Now?
You might be wondering why people are buying heavy leather gear in the middle of a heatwave. It’s all about the calendar.
Most of the major LARPs and Renaissance Festivals, including our local favorite TRF, kick back into high gear in September and October. In fact, for 2026, the official TRF campground early move-in starts as early as September 26th!
Little did I know when I first started working with Eric that "July is the new September" for makers. Because everything at The Kilted Leatherworker is bench-made: meaning we cut, stitch, and finish every single piece by hand: there is a lead time involved. Smart adventurers know that if they wait until August to order their custom gear, they’re risking a "restock delay" that could leave them empty-handed on opening weekend.
From "Kilt Accessory" to "Character Kit"
One of the coolest shifts I’ve seen this year is how people are viewing the sporran. It’s no longer just "the thing you wear with a kilt." It has evolved into a vital piece of "Character Kit."
The algorithm has been pushing "handmade fantasy" hard this summer, and it’s opening up the world of leatherwork to people who might not even own a kilt. I love seeing how different styles are being mapped to specific character classes:
- The Sorcerer: Often features celestial engravings, moon motifs, or intricate brass hardware.
- The Druid: Leans into natural textures, "hair-on" hides, and leaf or tree engravings.
- The Paladin: Clean lines, sturdy full-grain leather, and perhaps a sigil or crest.
- The Fighter: Rugged, distressed finishes with heavy-duty closures that look like they’ve survived a few goblin ambushes.
This shift means that your belt pouch isn't just a place to put your phone; it’s a storytelling device. It tells everyone at the tavern who your character is before you even say a word.
The Modular Revolution: One Pouch, Many Faces
The biggest trend blowing up right now is the "modular flap." Most makers (us included!) are moving toward designs that allow for versatility.
Why buy four different pouches when you can have one incredible foundation and swap out the "face" of it? This is exactly where the industry is heading. People want a hidden belt sleeve that works on a kilt, a regular leather belt, or even a baldric. They want a pouch that can handle a modern smartphone and a heavy wallet, but still looks like it belongs in the 14th century.

Because we keep our production runs small: usually just 5 to 15 units at a time: every piece we send out is unique and made with love.
(And honestly, a dragon-engraved Highland Nomad looks pretty incredible next to a matching Chronicler’s Cover journal when you're logging your campaign notes.)

The Etsy and Shopify algorithms are already pushing handmade goods to the top of the feed, and the best makers are going to be booked up by the time August rolls around.
Whether you're looking for a Sorcerer’s celestial pouch or a rugged Fighter’s sporran, focusing on quality, durable materials will always be a better investment than a mass-market "fast fashion" costume piece. You want something that will last as long as your character's legacy.
